Beendigen's Native Women's Crisis Home was established in 1978 and can provide accomodations for up to 24 women and children. The average stay for women & children is approximately six weeks.  

Beendigen's Crisis Home is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Crisis Home provides safe, temporary shelter to women and their children who are seeking refuge from women abuse.  The Crisis home is staffed by Residential Counsellors at all times and Children's programs are available during the weekdays.

The Crisis Home provides a safe home for women and children to escape women abuse, to stabilize and gain a variety of community resource/support to enable them to live free of violence.

Resident Counsellors provide support and safety planning.  Referrals are made to other agencies depending on their needs. Individual and group sessions are offered around the area of women abuse, budgeting, parenting, addictions, life skills and are carried out on a daily basis.  Comprehensive community support is available to women needing ongoing assistance when leaving Beendigen Inc. Crisis Home.

Our facility is also wheelchair accessiable, and residents have access to a full range of counselling services.  

Objectives:

• to provide short-term emergency shelter to Aboriginal women and their children who are in crisis.
• to provide a comfortable home like atmosphere, where women can receive emotional support and counseling necessary to assess their situations and make positive changes in their lives.

Eligibility Criteria:

• no women or their children are refused admission based on their race, religion or ethnic origin. Priority is given to Aboriginal women and their children who are experiencing abuse
• admission is based on availability of space at the Crisis Home and if full every effort is made to utilize other crisis homes in Thunder Bay and surrounding area.
